Court Upholds Fines Against Lewis and UMW

The 1.5 circuit court upheld contempt fines totaling 1.44008 million dollars against Lewis and the United Mine Workers for refusing to carry out a court order to air a strike. Judge Goldsborough had imposed these penalties earlier in 1948, with Lewis fined 20000 dollars and the union 1.460,008 dollars. The appeals court, in a unanimous ruling, found the fines not excessive compared to prior contempt actions and upheld the lower court’s authority under Taft-Hartley provisions concerning injunctions.
