Cold War Rivalry Grows in Africa With Soviet Chinese Aid
U S intelligence traces a pattern of Soviet and Chinese military and economic aid across at least eight African countries. China prepares to send Tanzania 20 MIG 19s and MIG 15 jets by year end, and has supplied Sudan with six MIG 19s plus about 42 million dollars in projects. Russia backs Guinea with naval support, supplies four fast boats and trains, and has delivered tanks and weapons to Somalia after earlier moves in Sudan and the Horn of Africa. Congress limits U S aid to Africa to 1.3 million dollars for the coming year.
