Socialists Name Hoopes As Chairman

Darlington Hoopes of Reading Pennsylvania was reelected Sunday to a two year term as national chair man of the Socialist party at the end of the party's three day biennial convention in Chicago attended by 100 delegates from 23 states. Hoopes, an attorney and Pennsylvania state legislator, was the Socialist party candidate for president in 1952 and 1956. The delegates elected 16 members to the national committee and created an honorary chairman post naming Norman Thomas. The party's draft on foreign policy urged neutralization talks on Viet Nam Laos and Cambodia and opposed further federal civilian defense spending and a multinational thermonuclear fleet. The Socialists oppose Castro and favor expanding aid to Latin American governments carrying out reforms.
