Father steals plane to flee with children in California
In Lone Pine California on August 25 AP reports Henry Billingsley 40 seized a plane at Bishop and flew away with his two children after visiting his estranged wife. He demanded immunity from prosecution and that she return to him. A safe landing was made at a dry lake bed four miles from Lone Pine. Billingsley had only twice piloted a plane before and never alone. Authorities believe an accomplice aided his escape, moving the children to a deserted cabin in the Inyo foothills.

Rates on Potatoes Down by Interstate Commission
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered downward revision of freight rates on potatoes from the Princeton Cambridge Minnesota Wisconsin district to Kansas Missouri Arkansas Oklahoma Texas and Louisiana. The North Potato Traffic Association alleged rates were too high and rental charges for refrigerator cars too large. The commission kept the rental but limited future potato rates to not more than three cents per hundred pounds above Minneapolis St Paul rates to the same destinations.
