Four road deaths in area claim eight this week

Central Missouri recorded four of eight traffic fatalities over the weekend. Victims include William Taylor Vanderveer 23 of Howard County who died in a head on collision on Highway 3 near Armstrong his car burning. Charles Tompson 22 of Lake Ozark and James Roberts 20 of St James in a two car crash on Highway 5 east of Waynesville. Arthur Burns 57 of Fayette, Janet Miller 17 of Rocky River Ohio and Tuck Ellis 49 of Kremmting treated for injuries after a three car crash on U S 66 east of Waynesville. Alten Milholland is listed in serious condition after a one car wreck on Cole County Route C near Russellville.

Evangelistic Film Screening Set Tonight in Jefferson City

More than 1,200 readers invited to a private tonight screening of For Pete's Sake at Richardson Auditorium ahead of its Aug 4 and 5 run at Public Schools Stadium. Daring trio of escaped prisoners captured after hours chase

In Natchitoches Louisiana three Houston, Texas inmates James Marion Sumner, 28, Garry Williams, 22, and Luther Pettitt, 29, escaped Gregg County jail Sunday. They held hostages across the state, were pursued by hundreds of officers, and were finally captured after a farmer and his family were threatened. Pettitt was wounded and transported to a hospital, while Sumner and Williams were apprehended. FBI later filed kidnapping, interstate travel of a stolen car, and weapons charges.

Three Drowned in Missouri Desperation Leads to Manhunt

A trio of drownings occurred in Missouri as a large manhunt spanned eight parishes in Louisiana and surrounding states. An escapee was believed to remain at large as Texas Rangers state police the FBI and deputies pursued suspects along rivers and rural routes.

Judge appointed in Banks case

The Missouri Supreme Court named former Circuit Judge Virgil Casey Rose of Unionville as special commissioner to hear a dispute over Rep. J. B. Banks dwelling in the 54th District of St. Louis. The suit, filed by Atty. Gen. John C. Danforth, argues Banks failed to live in the district as required by the constitution. Banks contends the judiciary has no say over legislative disqualifications. Rose will subpoena witnesses and records, with findings subject to court review.

New Franklin girl crowned 1969 Miss Missouri in Atlantic City

Deborah Sue Riggs of New Franklin won the 1969 Miss Missouri crown at Atlantic City. Frances Elaine Biesemeyer, 11 year old Rebecca Ann Nelson received the Congeniality award. Other finalists earned scholarships and fashion awards as 24 contestants competed for the title.

Inmate Bound Over For Murder Charge

Ronald Westburg a 33 year old Missouri Penitentiary inmate is bound over to Cole County Circuit Court for trial in a first degree murder case returnable July 21 Westburg is accused of killing fellow inmate Fred Harling on May 6 Charges were dropped against Washington AP The White House announced today that President Nixon will confer with Prime Minister Harold Wilson of Great Britain at a British air base on Aug 3 This will be the last stop on the President s round the world trip which will include the Apollo 11 splashdown in the Pacific several Southeast Asia countries and Communist Romania The stop in England had not been announced previously but the White House said it would be impossible for Nixon to fly nonstop from Romania to Washington so his plane will set down in England for refueling and servicing Press secretary Ronald 4 b Ziegler said no other added stops are contemplated The President s arrival back home still is scheduled for Aug 3

Two-Car Crash Kills Kansas City Man and Sisters

Estele Whitaker, 55, of Kansas City died in a Sunday two car crash on Missouri 2 near Harrisonville. Two Crestwood sisters Pamela Badock, 23, and Patricia Badock, 15, perished when their car plunged into five feet of water along US BL two miles north of New London.
