In mid Missouri the Capital City awoke to a sparkling spring that erupts along High Street. Edward H. Pope, street commissioner, suspects a wet weather spring from recent heavy rainfall. Creeks flow into Wear's Creek and the Mississippi River as crews search for a cure and patch holes in the street.

Cole County Superintendent McKee Eyes August Resignation

Paul McKee the new Cole County school chief says he will likely resign by August. A Lehman resident and former Russellville R1 superintendent he defeated Roger Smith earlier this year on an abolish the office platform. He was sworn in July 5 and is auditing books and records.

Tanner Bridge Road closure planned for a month

Tanner Bridge Road will close after rush hour on Monday due to highway construction on the U.S. 54 urban project. District engineer Raymond JH Lahmeyer said the paving work will last about a month and the road had been reopened in winter for motorists’ convenience.

MOL program aims to test military role in space

Twelve U S spacemen at Edwards and Vandenberg train for orbital MOL flights to probe space as a military domain. The program, backed by contracts of 885 million dollars, envisions five two man crews launching by 1970 aboard a Titan 3M equipped Gemini modification for about 30 days each.

Industrialist Eaton relays Kosygin talks on Vietnam settlement

Eaton says Kosygin believes Vietnam conflict could be settled without China’s endorsement. The industrialist cites Kosygin linking Vietnam, the Arab Israeli clash, and a shift after North Vietnam bombing resumed. Eaton spoke after a 4½ hour Ottawa talk on June 30 with interpreter Anatoly Doymitzyn, noting Kosygin’s view on de Gaulle’s London visit and Glassboro talks.

McNamara Considers Civilians in Vietnam Nonfighting Roles

Secretary McNamara says civilians could replace some military workers in Vietnam to cut troop additions and reduce the high share of support troops. He mentions civilian construction personnel and possibly foreign workers, noting U.S. support troops outnumber combatants about two to one. He cites wartime port, road, and airfield needs as the reason.

John Rogers to Attend World Scout Jamboree

John Rogers earned selection to represent the Lake of the Ozarks Boy Scout Council at the 15th World Scout Jamboree in Idaho. The 26 day trip starts July 20 in St Louis and ends after a July 30 arrival at Farragut State Park with stops in Denver Boise Seattle and Yellowstone among others. Rogers, a Jefferson City High School junior, is the son of Mr and Mrs Paul Rogers of 110 Bolton Drive.

Jobless benefits down in June

Missouri unemployment insurance shows a June decline from May. June benefit payments totaled 2,339,592 dollars for 89,983 weeks of unemployment, versus 2,598,278 dollars for 80,869 weeks in May. Total initial and continued claims fell from 132,778 to 111,027. 6,344 claims were decided, with 2,848 denied for ineligibility or disqualification. An extra 87,160 dollars went to former Missouri workers in other states, down 21,184 from prior month.

Belair Elementary School Ready for Fall Use

Belair Elementary School will be ready for use this fall as district officials announce completion dates. Superintendent Joe Nichols Jr. confirms the project will be totally finished by August 21 with portions done by July 24, and everything ready within three weeks.
