The Ohio Supreme Court denied Dr James H Snook a rehearing of his death sentence for the June murder of Theora Hix. He faces the electric chair with next steps to the U S Supreme Court and a possible governor petition for clemency to life imprisonment.
Trading on the New York Stock Exchange slumped to the smallest volume since summer 1928 as prices hovered with no clear trend. Public indifference persisted while floor traders dominated activity and gains outnumbered losses. Public utilities showed bullish signs with Pacific Lighting and Commonwealth Power advancing, while U.S. Steel hovered near 185.4.
Chicago mayor William Hale Thompson vetoes the 1039 economy budget and orders the council to rethink police and fire funding and other measures affecting citizens. Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce condemns U S Chamber officials for attacks on the Federal Farm Board and calls for a hands off policy until agriculture prospers for all.

The funeral of Henry Bisges, a merchant and farmer of Otage Bend, was held Tuesday from the Catholic Church with a requiem mass. A parish procession led by the Men's Sodality accompanied the remains to the cemetery as many relatives and friends joined from nearby towns. Pallbearers included John Som meerer, Emil Rackers, Theo Rackers, Joe Schmidt, Frank Lehman, Ed Renterghem, H A Bode, and Ernst Braun. Attendance extended from St. Thomas, Meta, Montrose, Hoellzbown, and Wardsville with numerous family members listed as attendees.
Testimony before the Senate Lobby Committee described W G D Arcy Coca Cola publicity chief as having a personal method to reach President Hoover. H H Pike Jr the Wall Street sugar broker testified he heard the claim from an unnamed source. Senator Robinson challenged the note as unfair but Pike defended it as indicating possible access through a friend.
A five day investigation by a special Audrain county grand jury, aided by the attorney general's office and prosecutor J. W. Buffington, found insufficient evidence for indictments in five unexplained Boone and Audrain county deaths, including the Sturgeon death of Albert Proctor, 19, last October.
Poplar Bluff Missouri man Howard Sheely says a letter found with Elmer Sheehy near Shreveport was a ruse to draw him away from work. He notes no relative letter existed here and the Christmas dated note misled authorities.
W. F. MacPhee the trapper and prospector describes a simple method of bodily lubrication using Nujol to improve energy and mood during northern winters. The elder Sheehy suspects a killer who staged a family illness note to lure Elmer Sheehy home. Elmer, a gas line truck driver in Louisiana and Mississippi, is believed killed while en route. Sheriff McCown cooperates with Shreveport officers to capture the slayer.
The Humane Society of Missouri board voted to pay a 300 reward to Mrs. M A Co zart of St Louis who testified she reported a sick dog at the clinic before Christmas. The reward corroborates the secretary Robert F Sellars claim of finding and killing a dog with its mouth sewed shut amid accusations the tale was mythical.
In Springfield Missouri on January 3 AP reports former Mississippi congressman T Webber Wilson and many Missouri Democrats gathered for the annual Jackson day dinner seating about 600 guests. Attendees included Sam C Major Francis M Wilson C W Greenwade Kirk Hawkins C F Newman S Haynes R J Mitchell H G Mallet Dick Hall A B Holmes and delegations from Cape Girardeau and St Louis.
A hearing on freight rates for iron and steel shipments from Chicago St Louis Pittsburgh and other eastern points to Kansas was held in Topeka by ICC examiner Clifford. The complaint by C P Real transportation commissioner of the Topeka Chamber of Commerce seeks reparations for shipments since July 14 1928 and argues future rates are unreasonable. The examiner plans another hearing into potato rates tomorrow.
