Springfield workers on strike since September voted to extend the walkout. They rejected a company wage offer unless it included a closed shop, insisting on that condition as part of the contract.
Senator Barkley of Kentucky, Democratic leader, narrowed the congressional program to three main terms: extend the reciprocal trade program, broaden the Hatch anti politics law, and approve remaining appropriations. He projected end of session by June, despite some leaders predicting May adjournment. The House advanced non military War Department appropriations totaling 203,472,567 for flood control and other activities. Controversy centered on Bland proposal to restore funds and contract authority for extra Panama Canal locks for Navy use.
