J. M. Brooks, 82, the oldest member of Oklahoma’s last legislature session, died today in Muskogee. He once ran the Gatme hotel, where C. N. Haskell served as Oklahoma’s first governor and where the first legislature met, and he once employed Tom Mix as a bartender.
A historical ad warns against daily laxative abuse and encourages Cream of Najal as a gentle, natural constipation remedy. It claims the product soothes bowels, absorbs poisons, and aids peristaltic action, offering a inexpensive nightly dose and urging readers to buy at their druggist.
Washington February 17 AP The Senate Finance Committee heard former Treasury and Agriculture Secretary David F Houston state that World War I was a principal cause of today's economic ills. He cited 30 million killed or wounded and war expenditures totaling 268 billion, plus a public debt rise from 13 to 26.9 billion as the war’s aftermath. Houston noted rising state local spending and farm overproduction after the armistice, while Lamont could not attend due to a family illness.
John Markham Sr., president of Pelvaleum Corporation of America and longtime oil industry figure, died at Mercy Hospital from pneumonia at age 12. He entered the hospital Monday. his widow and three children were at his bedside. Burial plans uncertain between Tulsa and Bradford, Pa. He was active in Catholic Church work.

A nationwide alarm was sent out for Douglas, also a prospector.
A $10,000 extortion plot to steal from Nelson Hill, a wealthy grocery chain operator, was revealed as Chester H. Alexander, 48, unemployed auto salesman, was arrested in Birmingham, Alabama. The story notes a second figure involved and mentions related local political appointments.
In Tacoma Feb 17 two holdup men entered J W Fiddes store and attempted to open a locked cash register. Fiddes attacked with fists while one robber kept him at bay. The criminals fled empty handed. Separate item from Kansas City reports a burglar seized a diamond pin valued at $300 from Mrs Zack Wheat.
The McCawley bank moratorium measure clears the House after six Senate amendments and goes to Gov. Guy B. Park for signature. Magda Lupescu, a confidante of King Carol of Romania, arrived in Nice on February 17 in disguise with dyed hair to evade pursuit. Dr. Earle Harrison Coon a prominent Excelsior Springs Missouri physician and former medical advisor for the Missouri Workmen’s Compensation Board died in Kansas City. He served on the staff of Missouri State Hospitals at Nevada and St Joseph.

A Long Beach jury acquitted 23 year old William James Curly Guy of murdering Captain Walter Vanderwell aboard the yacht Carma. The state's sensational theory was rejected as the jury returned on the fourth ballot. Vanderwell, 39, led an adventure seeking crew of eight women and seven men aboard the rum runner converted craft set for a voyage to Hawaii and the South Seas. Guy and his wife had joined a 1931 Buenos Aires to San eer expedition.
The proseuction framed the quarrel with Wanderwill as motive for Wanderwill's killing. Francisco fled to Central America after the dispute and awaits disposition on illegal entry charges in Los Angeles. The jury delivered its verdict late at night after a 5 p.m. start, in a case tied to the Moulder affair. Just too bad for Francisco Segura as ammunition failed during a night incident in El Paso.
Jack Stingley 25, labeled a rum runner, was arrested in Denver for questioning in the $60,000 ransom kidnapping of Charles Boettcher II. Investigators say suspects moved cars from the Boettcher home after the abduction while Stingley may provide key information. search for him began Sunday.
