Washington reports a 1,609,000 drop in national job openings in January, pushing unemployment to 4,480,000 the highest since September 1941. Seasonal winter effects, bad weather, and reduced openings across construction and farming contributed, while factory employment remained steadier than a year ago.
World War II veterans who changed addresses since filing for service life insurance dividends should notify the post office immediately. H. Schubert of the veterans affairs office said veterans who report address changes will receive dividend checks promptly, as the VA arranged with the post office department to handle this. Change of address blanks are available at any post office.
Lt Gen Geoffrey Keyes American high commissioner to Austria since May 1947 left by plane for a series of routine conferences in Washington. Officials stressed the trip is standard and not tied to any special policy move.

The suspect broke free during a grapple with two guards and fled into the street after escaping through an open window.
Harry N. Martin, 18, near Jefferson City, avoided jail for careless driving but paid a $50 fine and $1 costs after being held for potential punishment. Judge Andrew Schwaber placed him on good behavior. Martin was arrested Sunday in the mill bottom area for driving on the wrong side. Francis B. Barker of Detroit was sentenced to five days in jail and fined $1 plus $1 costs for vagrancy. Four speeding violators—Max McLean, Robert K. Wadley, Robert Roark, and J. F. Smitherman of Kansas City—were fined $5 each after pleading guilty.
