Chairman John Fahey said violators face fines up to 5000 dollars and two years in prison, while officials who defraud may be fired, up to 10000 dollars and five years.
An army of 30 000 rioters swarmed Paris streets near Concorde and the Blysee Palace while infantry and police reinforced guards at the palace and airports. Bentonville Ark Feb 7 The father Roy Logston and his wife stepmother were jailed on child neglect charges after County Judge David Compion heard evidence that 11 year old Lola Logston was chained to a cot in her home for about three years The child was placed in Arkansas Children's Home Dr C J Clemer testified he saw Lola chained and wearing only underclothes The parents said the restraint was to stop her from running away after she threatened to kill her father
The Chicago and Northwestern Railway told the Interstate Commerce Commission today it plans a sinking fund to retire its bonds, the first railroad to back Roosevelt's debt payoff idea. In St Louis, Arthur F. Parnes of Mercantile Commerce Bank was named president of Manufacturers' Bank and Trust Co., succeeding Lafayette Bout.
The Evening Star reports the federal grand jury will consider indicting at least three people, two Legion leaders, over a graft scheme tied to funds for motorizing the army. Joseph Silverman Jr of New York is named. two former Legion executives and a National Guard officer are also alleged participants. General George Leach was questioned by the grand jury regarding the National Guard officer.
William Mahood, contractor from Niles, files habeas corpus in St. Louis circuit court to regain custody of Lars Hileen Mahood, six, daughter of Grace Thomasson Diefenbach. An order to produce the child was served at a night club where Oscar Diefenbach works as master of ceremonies. Mahood alleges unlawful withholding since divorce in 1930. Diefenbach, widow of Hugh W. Thomasson, married last Monday and earlier settled for $50,000 from collateral heirs after giving up claim to Thomasson’s $600,000 estate. A school note about Kentucky counties follows.
Senator Fess branded the air mail probe unfair and urged the committee to compel Walter F. Brown to testify. Chairman Black said Brown would appear if immunity from criminal prosecution were waived. no word on Brown’s willingness. Eugene R. White testified that he and W. Irving Glover took a 1931 Hamburg America free trip and helped obtain special steamship accommodations for Bagley, a Brown ally, with higher class space at a minimum rate.
Testimony described an international postal union conference and free transport of foreign post office reps by steamship lines. Bruce Company executives and former officials testified on contract specifications and an air mail contract change after input from MacCracken. Contempt for MacCracken and three aviation figures was sought for removing subpoenaed records. Postmaster General Farley promised no delay in deciding air mail contract actions amid disclosures.
Washington Feb 7 The Federal Trade Commission issued a formal complaint against 10 manufacturers of viscose rayon yarn accusing them of conspiring to form a price fixing monopoly. The accused firms supply virtually all rayon yarn used by U S textile mills and were ordered to answer within 30 days or face a cease and desist order.
In Havana on February 7, President Menendez administration decreed an 80 dial emergency law prohibiting general strikes amid a labor crisis. Police clashed with about 3,000 students protesting the death penalty removal under the Machado era. one student was killed and ten injured. An arbitration commission will oversee disputes, chaired by a labor department appointee, with three employer and three labor representatives.
Day and Representative Ruffin of the Sixth Missouri District recommend William S. Moore for the postmaster position at Warrensburg. Moore is currently serving as acting postmaster.
