Defense Budget To Aid Sound Job In Far East

Air Force Secretary Donald A. Quarles said the new U S defense budget is not retreating and provides the wherewithal for a sound job. He arrived for a two week tour of Far East Air Force bases and noted no general or secretary should be wholly satisfied with funding. He dismissed the Soviet 1 percent budget cut as not very serious and asserted the U S can match Red China's air buildup with the Far East force, calling the Communist air power stronger than last year.

At the Chase Hotel a would-be armed robber approached cashier Agnes Bublis 48 asking if a girl named Ruth left a cashier’s check. He displayed a pistol and demanded money but fled nervous and empty-handed after she moved out of sight, returning to a deserted lobby.

Two Women Sought As Key Witnesses

ST. LOUIS Circuit Ally Ed ward L Dowd sent out over 4500 notices nationwide seeking two women Frances Reynor and Huby Hoffman as key witnesses in a circuit court grand jury probe into alleged police payoffs. A related ruling voided a subpoena for Mrs Conestrove Kaplan for lack of clerk signoff. a new grand jury subpoena was served to her to appear before the jury Tuesday.

Nine Shoe Firms Sign Pact for Wage Boost in St Louis

Nine St Louis shoe firms signed a two year wage contract granting a 64 percent boost to 7,500 boot and shoe workers earning $1.43 an hour. Union official Leo Frieda and regional director Ben Derk said a possible third year could launch a pension plan with 4 percent hour contributions. The nine firms run 13 plants in St Louis.

Senator Fulbright chairman of the Banking Committee urged prompt administration recommendations on flood insurance. The housing and finance agencies said a disaster indemnity plan for floods is near completion for a January presentation to Congress. Lehman also pressed for a submission within days, while St Joseph Lead Co raised lead price to 16 cents per pound in New York.

Youthful Prowler Shot by Officer Near Home

Lt Louis W Porice Jacobsmeyer head of the crime prevention division shot and seriously wounded a 17 year old prowler outside a home last night. The youth named Lawrence Gregory was treated at Homer G Phillips Hospital for wounds to the head and wrists after the officer fired twice as the youth vaulted a fence. Jacobsmeyer said he fired a warning shot after discovering the prowler near his neighbor's yard and hearing his 12 year old daughter Helen scream.
