Steel Industry Loses Tax Battle in Expansion Fight

The Office of Defense Mobilization rejected the steel industry's request for rapid tax amortization on a new round of plant expansions. ODM Director Arthur Fleming said restoring the program would defy Congress' intent and unfairly discriminate against other industries. Herbert Hartbauer 51, prominent Washington resident, died Wednesday at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral at 2 p.m. Friday Emmanuel Lutheran Church with burial in church cemetery. Mrs Laura Melton Dies at California

Laura Jessie Melton, 64, of California, died Wednesday morning at her daughter's home. Born October 22, 1902 in Olean Miller County, she was married to One K Melton, who survives, along with son Donald and ten grandchildren. Funeral services set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church California, with burial in California Cemetery.

Proxy Marriage Ends in Return Home Says California Court

In El Cajon a court ordered the husband to pay the wife’s return passage after a proxy marriage. Adelaida de Leon y Ender-Arocha testified the arrangement, made via mail from Seville, was not genuine and she had come to the United States four months ago. Her husband Salvacores Arocha was accused in a separate assault case but denied owning the business in Seville.

Clinton Hearing Set On Contested Sheriff Election

A Friday hearing will decide the contested sheriff election in Clinton Missouri. Lawrence W. Sartin, Democrat, was certified winner by 24 votes, while Everett W. Austin disputed the result alleging absentee ballots influenced the outcome.
