In St Louis the grand jury refused to indict the operator of a roaming house where four children died in a fire on October 27. The case involved Mrs Bertha Powell charged under city ordinances for permitting occupancy of the basement of her building. The children, left home late after a errand, were found in the basement apartment.
Veterans Administration officials forecast the GI home loan guaranty business will stay near a record 650000 applications in 1956. They credit easing loan restrictions and a period of higher interest costs but note the federal reserve rediscount rate remains high. The loan program, boosted since 1954, began booming after a 1953 rate raise, with veterans committing to substantial interest costs, yet loans and homes remain accessible to many.

In a rural community a 17 year old killer died six hours after being shot by a state police sharpshooter as a mass shooting ended. John Farlone killed three, wounded two, then opened fire at Gladys Small and her parents before being shot near a tree. Police officer Gus Zanos survived with injuries as the man lay dead after a night of gunfire and dynamite plotting.
Army recruiters plan a Saturday party and meeting at the St Louis recruiting main station to discuss enlisting men for an anti aircraft unit in the U S and for the 2nd Infantry. M Sgt Cleasan C Cox area supervisor Leroy C Repschlarger Sgt George M Tabler and others will attend with their wives. The Jefferson City office will be closed on what day according to the report.
