In Monroe Louisiana a municipal power plant outage left the city of about 400 in darkness for seven hours. Superintendent T. L. von Fossen canceled a TV speech and residents faced ruined food, bakery losses, and halted services before engineers restored power shortly after midnight.
Vice President Nixon told the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Boston that five roadblocks block peace and only Soviet leaders can remove them. He cited the division of Germany, arms race and atomic fears, the Berlin barrier, colonial status of Eastern European states, and Moscow directed subversion and espionage as core obstacles. He warned no real peace is possible while these factors exist.
The redhaired 17-year-old mistress of bank robber Louis E. Teller was sentenced today to a ten year term in federal prison for bank robbery. Four months pregnant, Mrs. Lora Ritenour sobbed as Judge James C. Connell noted leniency due to her condition. Pleading guilty to driving a getaway car in the $27,000 Cleveland Trust Co. branch robbery last January, Teller, 27, received a 25-year sentence. After arrest in Detroit, they admitted involvement in dozens of burglaries and robberies. The woman, who came from Virginia, will be sent to Alder Sol women’s federal penitentiary in West Virginia, eligible for parole in five years.
The state convention discussed a range of resolutions including appointing a special committee to study soldiers home facilities and potential legislation. New appointments were announced for the Junior Baseball commission and several state commissions, with meetings planned statewide in September and a Central Missouri conference on September 16.
Wall Street edged higher in late trading as steel shares supported the market. Major gainers in several divisions helped lift indices though price action grew mixed as session wore on. Volume slowed after a strong start with about 1.8 million shares traded. Bethlehem Steel rose about a point, with Steel, Youngstown and Wheeling also up. Anaconda and Kennecott dipped while American Smelting and Phelps Dodge rose. Reynolds Metals gained around half a point.

The Automobile Club of Missouri launches its annual School's Open Drive Carefully campaign in Jefferson City with over 100 posters placed at key intersections and near schools. Police will display posters on Sunday and Monday September 4–5, and bumper strips will announce the safety message on buses taxis trucks and cars.
A truck veered off its road and crashed into a tree three miles east of East Prairie late Saturday night killing three teenagers from nearby communities. Bobby Dowaln Turnba 18. John Frank Jackson 17. Shirley Lee Banks 17 were killed or died after being transported to St Mary's Hospital Cairo. Authorities said they likely intended to turn onto Highway 55 105 from Route A when the vehicle left the shoulder and crashed. The victims were returning to their homes from Charles community events.
Harley L. Tompkins, a 22-year veteran and former battalion fire chief, is reinstated on the Kansas City Fire Department payroll as a ladder truck driver after his wife and daughter picketed City Hall. Tompkins, discharged July 5 due to heart issues, declined a pension and will begin the new assignment next Wednesday.
A 92-year-old retired farmer John M. Jungmeyer died at his Russellville home after months of ill health. Born November 14, 1802 in Cole County to Mathies and Tracy Jungmeyer, he married Amelia Huuttenmeyer April 10, 1894. she died in 1934. Survivors include two sons Rev. Albert Jungmeyer Alma Ned and Gus Jungmeyer California Mo. one daughter Mrs. George Hoffman Russellville. two sisters Mrs. Rosena Johreis Russellville and Miss Sophia Jungmeyer California Mo. three brothers William Fred and Henry Jungmeyer all of Russellville. ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He farmed in Russellville until retiring 17 years ago and moved to town. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. J. J. Haberneck officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Herman J Heidel, 84, a rear woolen mill foreman, died at his home yesterday afternoon after about five years of ill health. Born July 24, 1874 in Junction City Kansas, he lived in California for 80 years. He married Mary Catherine Born in 1898. she died March 8. Survivors include daughters Helen Heidel California and Olive Mount Franklin Tennessee, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services at 10 am Tuesday at a California funeral home, Rev E L Koch officiating. Burial in Evangelical and Reformed Cemetery, California.
Funeral services were conducted in Clinton for the Rev Arthur N Lindsey born July 13 in Kentucky. State Senator from the fourth district, Lindsey served in public life before his death. Burial followed at Clinton.
Safety education meeting set for Tuesday at the Jefferson Building with Norman Key, Col Hugh Waggoner, Cog John Berglund, Arthur Summers, Gordon Renfrow, and Oral Spurgeon among speakers. Department staff training emphasized as a key objective. In St Louis, Henry W Dretsewerd died of a heart attack at Monsanto Chemical Co plant after collapsing on an elevator.
