Call for 50,000 Draftees Seen For November

A call for more than 50,600 draftees in November is expected as the Army’s manpower buildup continues amid the ongoing Korean War and possible troop increases in Germany. Of 62,000 previously announced reservists, 32,406 have already been called to active duty with specific reporting windows from Oct 2 to Oct 13 and from Oct 10 onward.

Boys Build Their Own Flying Saucer in Reading

In Reading Pennsylvania two youths built a flying saucer and caused a scare when a caller claimed it flew. Fifteen year old Sohn Feick and 34 year old Paul Fisher described the device made from a barrel top, insecticide bomb, Bunsen burner, reflector from a headlight, metal pipe, wire, a box and switch. They said a rocket is next.

Hedrick to Be Honored by Prince of Peace

Robert W. Hedrick of 932 Fairmount Boulevard will receive a 6-year certificate from the Missouri state grand commander for 42 years of continuous Knights Templar membership. The ceremony at the Masonic temple follows a banquet led by John Barton. State officers and local commanders will attend.

Armored Divisions Named For Fe Leonard Wood Training

The Army named four divisions to serve as training units at posts opened to meet growing training needs. The 6th Armored Division will station at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and the 5th Armored Division at Camp Chaffee Arkansas. Attorney General McGrath voiced disappointment at an appeals court ruling freeing Harry Bridges but said the Justice Department would accept the decision.

Deaths Louis F Wolff Local Contractor Dies at St Marys

Louis F Wolff 77 of 222 Brooks Street died yesterday at St Marys hospital after a heart attack. A concrete contractor for 40 years and owner of Wolff Contracting Co he was born in Jefferson City and married Almira Gungall in 1912. Survived by wife daughter Roy Kay Jr brother Fred and a grandson. He attended Presbyterian church and church Bible class. Funeral arrangements noted.

City council approves planning official appointment and bids for Elm Street bridge

The council approved Lutkewitte appointing Homer Ferguson to a two year term on the city planning and zoning commission. It ordered the city engineer to advertise bids for the Elm Street bridge over Weir's Creek and passed ordinances for sewer district 7B and 82 construction. A tax levy plan and jetty plans were also authorized.

Ninety skunks vied for a single acting role on KTTV Hollywood's Jack Rourke show after a one week newspaper ad. Station officials joked about the odor and hoped a talented polecat might be chosen, though no decision had been made.

Street committee reports on street grades and paving bids

The council received reports on street grades from Hillsdale to Binder and Oakview and from Pamela to Linden. Bids were to be advertised for paving Pamela Street to fix drainage. A request for a fire plug at Catherine and Syble was sent to the water and light committee. A mother seeking Harding Street grading was referred to the Street committee. Boy Held in Fatal Stabbing Faces Sept. 5 Hearing

Fourteen year old Thomas David Hart admitted fatally stabbing Kathryn Pieper, age unknown, as police quoted. Judge Cowan set a Sept. 5 hearing to decide juvenile or criminal court, with Hart placed under daily psychiatric consultation and held at the Jackson county parental home. Hart described urges to kill, stating he felt crazy while stabbing. His mother attributed action to a radio program he liked. Hart was a "special student" not mentally deficient, and he discussed aspirations to be a preacher despite the grim act.
