Woman admits plotting husband’s murder for hire
Mrs. Ea Bartel, 41, told police she agreed to pay 740 to hire a Chicago gunman to kill her husband, a 45 year old blacksmith, after alleged cruelties since 1911. The plot faltered when the supposed gunman was a patrolman who trapped her. Bartel and Robert Hahn, 32, are charged with conspiracy to murder. Bartel’s husband’s life is insured for about 2,657. A second note reports Harry Knight, 35, died after falling from an eighth story window in a downtown St Louis hotel.

Galena man to be arraigned on murder charge
Charles Gibbons, 44, of Galena, Eas., captured Saturday in Joplin after a nationwide search, will be arraigned in justice court tonight on a first degree murder charge in the slaying of Ralph Price, 19, of Galena last May 24. County Attorney Leo Armstrong said a district court trial likely will be set for October. Gibbons, detained at his sister’s home, told officers he planned to rest before surrendering and alleged Price threatened his life. Witnesses say Price was unarmed when Gibbons shot in a Galena grocery store. Gibbons had planned a trip to the Pacific Coast before turning himself in. Pete Irwin of Galena, Gibbons’ companion, is jailed on a murder charge in Oregon and awaits trial in September.
