University seeks private housing for 500 students

Columbia officials urged local residents and the Chamber of Commerce to locate accommodations for 500 to 600 university students as campus housing is full. Enrollment is expected near 6,800 with registrations rising, and without available rooms many students may be forced to leave Columbia or transfer.

St Louis Barbers Vote Down Price Increase

St Louis barbers, by a six to one margin, rejected a proposal to raise the haircut price from 1.50 to 1.73. The motion to increase failed at a union meeting of about 900 members of the AFL Journeyman Barbers International Union. Present prices will stay in effect at least until March when the union contract expires.

Judge Appointed In Furniture Case

The Missouri Supreme Court named W. Jackson of the 20th Jaellevnd Circuit as special judge in a Furniture Industry case brought by Furniture Industri§a Inc. and Harold B. Smalley against the Department of Corrections director over counts tied to prison furniture manufacturing. The suit seeks about $7,000 under an agreement for prison workshop operations during B. M. Casteel’s tenure. The original petition targeted Thomas White Malton, later amended to include R. S. N. Bidson. Judge Sam C. Blair has disqualified himself. No date is set. Separately, Charles B. Latimore filed against Edward H. Kuehn seeking $7,0?0 for rent, utilities, and a balance on furniture purchases tied to care of Kassimir Kuehn. Kassimir died May 11.

Attorney Allen Arrested in St Louis County Case

Allen, 42, of 201 Cherry St, a former attorney, was arrested by the State Highway Patrol in St Louis County yesterday on a charge of careless and reckless driving. He was released on a 506 bond after appearing in court, claiming he was returning to Jefferson City from a business trip.

Baptists Impressed By Religious Life Found in Russia

Four American Baptist clergymen returning from a two week Moscow visit said they were profoundly impressed by religious life in Soviet Russia. The group included Rev. Theodore F Adams president of the Baptist World Alliance and Rev. Carney Hargrove. They noted friendliness in churches and society and observed material progress since a 20 year earlier trip. Adams also commended the beauty of resort areas and said they met without learning restrictions.
