Waterbury mayor, 18 others convicted in graft conspiracy

A Waterbury jury convicted Mayor Frank Hayes and 18 associates of conspiring to defraud the city of over a million dollars in a long running graft scheme. The verdicts, delivered after six hours of deliberation, carry possible prison terms up to 15 years under updated conspiracy laws. The judge would set sentences after motions to set aside the verdicts are heard.

Weather Instrument Measures Water Temperature Mile High

The American Meteorological Society announced a new delicate instrument by Dr. C. H. Heck to measure upper air temperature a mile up. Using a cascade of mirrors to focus light on a thermocouple, it detects tiny heat changes and can predict weather within 24 hours. It works day or night and can indicate frost potential by cloud and humidity variations.

City Officials and Ex-Politicians Testify in Waterbury Case

City comptroller Daniel J. Leary and two ex state leaders Harry E. Mackenzie and Charles E. Williamson testified as witnesses that they were hired by Hayes to lobby at the capitol for Waterbury bills and split fees with Leary. Convicted also were George H. Kingsley and John W. Meany, New Jersey partners in a New York auditing firm charged with filing false reports on the city’s fiscal condition. Originally 27 accused. three freed and one fugitive.

Worry Tied to Arthritis by Boston Doctors

Chicago August 17 Physicians from Boston report in the Journal of the American Medical Association that worry and stress, including poverty and grief, may be tied to the onset and flare ups of rheumatoid arthritis. They caution that proving the link requires more study.

Social stress linked to rheumatoid arthritis in study

A tailed psychiatric study of 50 rheumatoid arthritis patients found 31 with financial hardship and work insecurity showing arthritis flare ups aligned with social stress. Twelve more showed some timing relation, seven had no link, and the work pattern suggests a different type of person among those with varicose ulcers. The report notes arthritis affects women more, whites more, and the poor more than the rich.

Shoe Sales Rise in Eastern States in 1999 Half-Year

The New England Shoe and Leather Association reports five leading chains sold 44.38 million dollars in the first six months of 1999, up four percent from the prior year. Net profits reached 31.69 million, up 57 percent, with Melville Shoe Corp leading at 18 million gross and one million net. one firm declined in sales and profit.

Mexico Missouri August 17 AP Mrs Mary E Fish 70 uses prize winning ribbons from needlework contests in nine states over 39 years to adorn a quilt rather than dust collection. She has collected four hundred of the 570 ribbons won in contests and uses them as bright patchwork.
