Two Americans Seized After Arrival on Batory in England

Two American men, William Jesse Newton and Howard C. Bell, were taken by British police from the Polish liner Batory off Southampton and handed to immigration authorities. The ship’s master offered to carry them back to New York on August 30. Newton, a 26 year old from New York, arrived in a seaplane several days earlier. Bell, a stowaway from Des Alpes, was detained to await possible return to the United States. An American consular attache accompanied the officers. The exact charges were not disclosed.

Hydrogen Bomb Compared With A Bomb Fireball and Blast

New York reports describe the hydrogen bomb as vastly more powerful than the A bomb. It predicts a fireball far larger and hotter, with a deadly flash over a wide area and a blast that could topple many structures from Manhattan to Newark, with widespread destruction and fires.

Three Killed in U S 69 Head-On Collision

A head-on car crash near Mosby on U S highway 69 killed Oliver 41 and his wife Hazel 38 and Harold Lee Carter 21 all Negroes. Oliver's old daughter Frances 9 was injured. The other driver Jesse A Crower 34 of Lathrop also injured and taken to Excelsior Springs hospital. Police say the Oliver family lived in North Kansas City and Crower may be from Cleveland Ohio.

Driver Fined for Reckless Driving in County Court

H. H. Walker was fined 15 pounds and costs by Magistrate Foster S. Wheats for careless and reckless driving. He was arrested Saturday on Highway 50 west.

Draft Probably Will Take Over 185,000 This Year

Washington August 16 AP expected draft calls to exceed the 185000 authorized for the year. Selective Service head Maj. Gen. Hershey said needs rose with the world situation and Congress removed size limits on armed services. He urged possible calls for 50,000 more in November and December and noted shortages of doctors and other professionals.
