United States officials voiced confidence that a Japanese peace treaty would be signed in San Francisco when the conference opens September 4. Secretary of State Acheson said the Kremlin would wage propaganda to disrupt the session, though other officials saw no clear action likely to derail the conference.
New York Aug 9 AP reports July retail sales show a split picture. Some chains gain up to 13 percent while others fall 11 to 45 percent as merchants contend with higher prices and war scare effects. Department stores lag as stockpiled goods era fades, inventories remain high yet anticipated demand may rebound later.
Nikolai Shvernik urged a Soviet U S peace pact including Red China in reply to President Truman. Acheson challenged Soviet deeds, urged UN action, and questioned a San Francisco delegation. Washington outlined three pacific arrangements including a US Australia New Zealand security accord and a Japan status treaty to end occupation. San Francisco hosts the Sept 1 signing of the Australia New Zealand pact.
A Chillicothe story about a woodpecker flying off with a golf ball won the monthly feature prize in a contest among AP papers in Miss. Bill Plummer of the Chillicothe Constitution Tribune submitted the tale. The piece describes the bird pecking a plastic practice ball, getting its bill stuck, and Mrs. Edwin Bierman chasing it.
St. Louis motorists welcome a price war as service stations in St. Louis and St. Louis County cut gasoline by three cents per gallon. Regular gasoline drops from 23.9 cents to 20.2 cents as more stations adopt the lower price amid the wider competition.
