Kansas City Aug 7 AP Harold Jug McSpaden pro at Victory Hills led a 60 plus field after a flood lighted first nine at Westwood Hills with 68 35 33 and noted many players struggled to judge distance under night illumination while spectators searched fields with flashlights and some scores drifted into the 30s. Heflin Injured in Auto Wreck Near Denatur Alabama

United States Senator J Thomas Heflin of Alabama sustained bruises cuts and a sprained wrist when his automobile collided with a telephone pole to avoid a log truck. Three party members were injured. Heflin and relatives were treated at Decatur area facilities and a physician assisted Heflin at a hotel.

Grand jury sought to probe Buckley killing in Detroit

Prosecutor Chenot petitioned Circuit Judge Lester Moll for a 23 member grand jury to investigate the slaying of radio announcer Jerry Buckley and other recent Wayne County killings. Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine neared the 420 hour endurance record in the Greater St. Louis monoplane at Lambert field Aug 7. Ex legislator of Oklahoma tied to illegal still arrest

Manuel Herrick former Oklahoma congressman from the Cherokee strip was arrested by prohibition agents in St Marys County Maryland for operating a still. He was jailed in Baltimore awaiting a hearing. Herrick, 54, had returned to Washington after retirement and lived near California Maryland. He had worked as a boiler tender and utility man at a mill for 15 dollars weekly. The report notes his eccentricities during his time in Congress.

AID TO DROUGHT FARMERS PLAN OUTLINED BY GRAIN STABILIZATION BODY

Washington August 7 AP Carl Williams farm board member for cotton outlined a plan to aid drought stricken farmers via the grain stabilization corporation. Local seed distribution outfits would form responsible state corporations to guarantee notes from farmers and arrange seed sales in car lots on easy payments for one or two years. The plan asks local groups to handle distribution, note collection, and freight with no profit to the organization. The grain stabilization board has grain to spare and can replace sold feed. The act allows discretionary loan terms but not direct grants.
