Missouri WPA program slows after October surge

The Missouri Works Progress Administration program, which ran about $5.5 million monthly last October, is slowing as congressional curtailment of work relief funds reduces activity. Deputy administrator E. Max Basye estimates current monthly outlay near $3.6 million and predicts further declines with a 25 percent cut in administrative expenses.

Grover Clevenger announced new prison reforms at Algoa state peniten tiary including inmate classification with medical and social histories, psycho logical testing by Dr Henry Peters, and classroom courses for literacy, shorthand, bookkeeping, and possible engineering. Inmates would teach classes while guards receive training. attendance may be incentivized in future.

Missouri cuts hit Works Progress Administration roles hard

The state agency trims staff by 35 percent as Congress caps costs. About 50 administrative workers moved to Jefferson City and several in district offices were dismissed. Relief rolls fell from 117,000 to 71,500 in under a year, with 6,500 layoffs last month under a 30 day rule for long-time workers. An order from Washington followed.

Fatal blast kills couple in Oregon City incident

An explosion of blasting powder killed a woman and her estranged husband and badly injured their 13-year-old daughter in Oregon City. Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Steen said Lee Phillips set off the blast amid marital troubles. Phillips, 40, was blown to pieces. Mrs Phillipy’s body was hurled 35 feet into a tree.

No man killed as baby escapes in car wreck

Paramount reports half year earnings with subsidies

Paramount Pictures announces six month consolidated earnings ended June 30 of 2,130,000 dollars, including 978,000 from partially owned subsidiaries, or 62 cents a share. Compare to 1,225,811 dollars in 1938 first half, 25 cents a share. Twenty legislators return from partially owned subsidiaries for the revision commissions.

Campbell preliminary hearing set for August 15

In Bloomfield Missouri the preliminary hearing for Glenn Campbell, charged in the fatal subbing of Alta Swanner on July 1, will resume August 15 after a second full day of questioning. Both sides requested more time to summon additional witnesses, with the hearing having been recessed since July 30.
