Public Hearing On Route H Location Planned In Fulton

The State Highway Commission will hold a public hearing Thursday at the Callaway County Courthouse in Fulton to gather views on the Route H location and design in Callaway and Boone Counties. Missouri Health Planning Council Reports Rural Emergency Gaps

A 20 month study by Missouri governor’s advisory council finds ambulance service largely inaccessible in many areas and eight of twenty health service regions lack planning agencies. The report notes emergency cases suffer and a model to gauge local needs has been used in Springfield and Kansas City to aid planning and federal funding applications.

Officials ready for threatened May Day protests

Deputy Atty Gen Richard Kleindienst said 7 30 police and National Guard will be on hand to control May Day demonstrations in Washington. He dismissed threats to close the government as hot air and told GOP senators not to worry. The security force includes 5000 DC police 1400 National Guardsmen 450 US Park Police and 450 Capitol Police plus plans to limit bridge closures. Demonstrators also rallied at the Justice Department in the People’s Lobby demanding an end to war hunger and racial injustice.

Referendum on 18-year-old vote ruled unconstitutional

Atty. Gen. John C. Danforth said it would be unconstitutional to require Missouri voters to ratify the federal constitutional amendment granting 18-year-olds the vote. The Missouri Senate had added a referendum to the ratification and sent it to the Elections Committee for a hearing. The attorney general cited 1920 Supreme Court and Missouri Supreme Court opinions denying such referral as unconstitutional.

California wins waiver for stricter auto emission rules

EPA grants California a waiver to apply its tougher emission standards for light and heavy duty vehicles for model years 1972 through 1975, with checks on off road vehicles and new test procedures. Federal approval includes a ban on high octane gasoline sales from 1973 models and notes a separate tax based on compression ratios may proceed without a waiver.
