Western Union linked to state bookmaking raid

In WRIDGETON New Jersey a raid on a local telegraph office uncovered a gambling operation and bookmaking links. Deputy Attorney General Nelson Stamler said the firm could face state loss of license as 80 percent of the business involved out-of-state activity. Warrants were expected for Western Union officials and other responsible New Jersey officials.

Deaths Guy R Sappington Dies at Clarksburg

Guy Ray Sappington, 72, died of a heart attack at his Clarksburg home. Born March 6, 1874 near Clarksburg, he was a carpenter who worked on government projects and owned Lake of the Ozarks property near Versailles. Survived by two sisters and a brother, funeral plans pending with Rev. J L Freeman to conduct services at Versailles Christian church and burial in the Clarksburg Masonic cemetery.

50 000 Trout Anglers Use Missouri Parks

Missouri trout parks drew about 50 000 anglers last year as trout tags went on sale at 50 cents daily. Dr. G B Herndon, chief of the Conservation Commission fisheries section, reported a 51 percent rise in 1949 tag sales above the prior five year average.

Versailles Firemen Recover Body Of 65 Year Old Woman

Versailles April 27 special The body of 65-year-old Mrs Orbin Hays was recovered from the water filled basement of her farm home eight miles east of Versailles after a fire yesterday afternoon Firemen entered the basement about 5 30 pm when flames subsided Coroner Birch Medicus said no inquest will be held He noted the body likely burned badly Fire is undetermined and may have been caused when the floor burned through neighbor Oscar Gerlt shouted for help but flames were out of control before entry Found alone at the time of discovery Dell Shaw and Charles Smith lived nearby but did not see the fire due to a ravine

Mrs. M. Hossman Dies at Her Home

Mrs Matilda A Hossman 76 died at her McGirk home after five years illness. Born May 4 1873 near California she was the daughter of Edward and Henrietta Heyssel. She married Lewis Hossman Feb 26 1896. he died in 1924. Survived by son Oscar twin daughters Thelma and Lela and sister Mrs Clara Seitz. Funeral services will be at Jamestown Evangelical and Reformed Church tomorrow afternoon.

Mary Hickcox 94 Dies at California Home

Mrs. Mary E. Hickcox, 94, died this morning at her home near California after a several year illness. Born January 8, 1856 in Versailles, she married in 1873 at High Point. Her husband and two sons preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter Mrs. C. H. McBroom, two sons Malcolm E. and Elmer B. Hickcox, both of California, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Two daughters, Mrs. J. H. Stokes and Mrs. Gale Scitt, reside in Jefferson City.

Hold Last Rites for David West Today

Funeral services for David West 72 were held at Liberty church with burial in the church cemetery. He died Tuesday afternoon of coronary thrombosis at his home south of Belle. He was a farmer, longtime caretaker at Liberty cemetery and custodian of Liberty Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife Mary and several children and other relatives.

KC Mayor to Appear In Gambling Probe

Mayor William E Kemp said he plans to appear before a Senate subcommittee investigating interstate gambling in Washington. He initially declined McFarland’s invitation, then received four more telegrams urging his appearance. The report notes 10 percent of 117 English crafts at Columbus era were leather trades.
