Mary Johnson, 22, daughter of a miner’s widow, was sentenced in Welch West Virginia to 13 years in prison for second degree murder after pleading guilty to killing her boyfriend who wanted to quit. Olin Lazar, 32, died in Augusta after being clawed by a 350 pound lion at Robert F. Meyer’s Jackson area lion cage. Lazar unlocked the pen door and approached the bars, the animal gripped his arm and chest, causing fatal injuries despite Meyer’s efforts to intervene.

Three draegermen George Morrell Jack Inpson and a freeman Hirschfield forced through the tunnel opening to reach two miners Robertson and Scadding trapped in a cavern. The rescued men were exhausted muddy and weakened but happy to see the rescuers. They were carried up the shaft to the surface then placed in ambulances and taken to the hospital after medical checks and comfort.

Al'loona Pa April 23 AP The death of 9 year old Matthew Sonny Karmendi from a broken skull was ruled a murder. Margaret Karmendi 24 and Roy Lockard 24 signed sworn statements accusing each other of striking Sonny with a heavy object. Sonny died Tuesday night after Lockard carried him to a hospital. The two suspects had met while the mother's husband worked in a silk mill and allegedly plotted during evening outings to movie theaters.
A mother testifies Roy grabbed a pitt from his pocket and, near the 17th Street Bridge, warned something would happen before allegedly striking a baby a mile later. The statement prompted authorities to file murder charges against both Roy and the mother.
