Independent group urges action to avert Formosa war

Court Test Slated In St Louis County

St Louis County will test the validity of its planned shift to a new police department through the courts. County supervisor Lumen F Matthews instructed county counsel to file suit challenging the charter amendment transferring sheriff police powers to the new department, possibly starting in circuit court and moving to the state supreme court. The council set a $10 000 annual salary for the new superintendent, who has not yet been appointed. Sheriff Arthur C Mosley warned he will retain police powers until assurances are legally settled, continuing civil powers under the new structure.
