Plastic heart valves may substitute for living valves
Four Albany medical college physiologists described tiny plastic heart valves that can imitate faulty valves. Tested on about 30 dogs, five remain healthy after six months. If successful in humans within two years, valves would be sewn into the heart to replace damaged valves, offering potential lifesaving treatment for rheumatic fever and congenital malformations.

Deaths Mary K Mertens Dies in Hospital
Mary K Mertens died in St Marys hospital Jefferson City after five weeks as a patient. Born October 4 1871 in Rhineland Germany she came to the United States at age 20 and lived in the Frankenstein community most of her life. She married Jacob Kever who died in 1913 and William Mertens who died in 1932. Six children survived: Frank and Werner Kever Mrs Ray Laughlin of Chamois area Harry Kever of Loose Creek Mrs Frank Backes of Jefferson City and Mrs Joe Laughlin. Surviving also are a brother Joseph Luetters Parson Kansas 28 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was active in Frankenstein Catholic church affairs until health declined.

Clarksburg Woman, 90, Dies at Her Home
Mrs. Mary Josephine McDaniel, aged 90, died Sunday night at her Clarksburg home after a long illness. Born December 26, 1859 in Cooper County, she had lived in Clarksburg for 20 years. Her husband Trea McDaniel and a son MorDecai preceded her in death. Funeral plans involve Russell Keyes and family leaving for Memphis to attend Mrs. L. H. Northrup’s funeral. Northrup formerly Chas Shoup of Jefferson City, a frequent visitor there.

Car Crash Injures Boy and Driver in Rural Ditch
A boy sustained lacerations in an accident and is expected to go home in a day or so. The hospital spokesman called his condition good. John J. Bemboom, driving the car, had a wrist abrasion. He and his two year old son Herbert, who was uninjured, were released after checks. Bemboom said he hit loose gravel rounding a curve and skidded into a ditch.
