Robinson denies making Crismon deal in bank deposits case

State Treasurer William E. Robinson testified he never struck a deal with ex banker J. B. Crismon to boost deposits at the defunct First State Bank of Bonne Terre. He said a $2,500 cash contribution from Crismon was for campaign work to promote a treasurer succession proposal and that he did not file a report on the gift as no such report was required by law.

Second high rise housing project proposed for Jefferson City

The Jefferson City Housing Authority plans a second elderly high rise on the 10 Jackson St site to add 100 units. Director Ted J. Herron cites 113 displaced elderly and rising demand as the city’s elderly population grows. He notes Col umbia has 340 units and urges a turn key approach to reuse specifications.

Hotel fire kills seven at Cleveland landmark

Flames swept the 10 story Pick Carter Hotel Tuesday night killing seven people including relatives of Heart musical cast members. About 220 guests and 80 staff were evacuated as 150 firefighters fought the blaze. The cause was listed undetermined awaiting arson squad checks.

Downtown traffic plan eyed to curb parking and jaywalking

Jefferson City Missouri Parking and Traffic Commission discussed two plans to improve downtown flow. Proposals would ban parking on High Street and end jaywalking with public education and enforcement starting after May 1. Warnings first, then citations. a route speed survey was also requested and several street parking prohibitions were recommended pending City Council approval. An eight foot statue of Sir Winston Churchill arrived in St. Louis en route to Westminster College Fulton for a memorial.

Antiviral drug claims cure for common cold in 24 hours

In Chicago a new antiviral drug NPT-10881 reportedly cures the common cold within a day and may treat influenza and chickenpox. Dr. Paul Gordon and Newport Pharmaceuticals’ Alvin Glasky reported at a scientific meeting that Argentina approved NPT-10381 for general use, with early studies showing fever and other symptoms easing in 24 hours and no major side effects. The drug is under testing in multiple countries and has been given to over 500 people.

Meany attacks inflation alert in Nixon era policy

AFL CIO President George Meany condemned President Nixon's inflation alert policy and the push for a low wage economy.
