Missouri tax officials report a brisk hustle as the filing period nears the Friday deadline. From January 1 to April 15, the State Tax Office operates five days a week, with delays and fines for late or tardy returns and a rising number of mailed-in filings awaiting processing.
Three men Marvin Sharp 36 A W Snider 43 and Jimmy Wood 28 were arraigned before Magistrate O Lee Munger on charges of escaping from the Sawmill prison farm near Henley Sunday They waived preliminary hearing and were bound over for trial in Cole County Circuit Court A fourth man James Earl Ray is charged with attempted escape from the same facility and requested a preliminary hearing Ray who is serving 20 years for a St Louis robbery was reportedly among the group seized after stealing a car on U S 63 near Westphalia The men allegedly obtained liquor during their brief freedom and were drunk when arrested Correction director Fred T Wilkinson commented on the episode
Louis E. DeWitt testified before the Public Utilities Commission that 378 calls billed by General Telephone Co. were not made by him or his family. He paid $1,000 for 374 calls tied to bars, restaurants, and various establishments. A PUC examiner finished hearings and will forward a settlement recommendation.
The Little Hoover commission finds state employment practices unchanged since 1955 and 1965. It criticizes lack of a central personnel agency and notes fewer than half of state employees are hired through competitive examinations.

In Ferndale Michigan two young boys James Sutherland aged five and Mark Snow aged four were playing near a busy street when they dashed into traffic. An oncoming driver swerved and stopped in time, but the driver then allegedly pulled the children from the road and scolded them before driving off.
The Southeast Missouri Building and Construction Trades Council AFL-CIO based in Cape Girardeau withdrew pickets Wednesday from lead mine construction sites in the Buick and Bixby area of Missouri.
Sherwood M. Wyatt, judge of the first district, filed for re election to a two year term as a Democrat. He has held the seat about 20 years and is currently unopposed. Also filed and unopposed are Henry G. Gretlein, second district Republican, Route 2. and Presiding Judge Fred A. Distler, Democrat, Henwick Lane, who would face a four year term if elected.

A nine year old Jefferson City boy, Jeffrey Morse, was struck by a car while walking to school. He sustained head abrasions and a possible hip injury and was taken to St. Mary's Hospital. Two traffic accidents on U S 54 in Callaway County Wednesday night and today left seven injured. Jimmy Robert Inman, 29, of Cape Girardeau, was seriously hurt when his car struck the Middle River Bridge and overturned. a guard rail impaled the vehicle. Three Cape Girardeau passengers sustained serious injuries. bridge damage about 301 dollars. In a separate crash, Nathan E. Gaskill, 29, his wife Bonnie, 25, and daughter Sheree, 7, of Jefferson City were treated and released with minor injuries after their car collided with Robert C. Rackers, 19, also of Jefferson City, whose car went down a 20 foot bank. Rackers received a summons for failure to yield the right of way.
Three men in a Dallas garage workshop say they developed battery operated power crutches that allow a handicapped person to raise and lower himself with a push on a button. The device, to go into production this summer, is expected to cost about 500 dollars per pair.
Indications point to changes as beautification funds could unlock about 23 million in federal road money. The House Education Committee advanced a bill to provide aid for part time students, 17 to 5, linking it to a shared time measure allowing parochial and private students to attend public classes. Proponents say costs would be minor, around 75 dollars per student.
