Three Acworth sisters Eloise Elaine and Faye Hall were born blind from congenital cataracts. In Savannah a Georgia Academy for the Blind survey prompted operations. the Hall girls are among the first to gain temporary sight. They return to Macon with vision improving but not yet steady.
Atty. Gen. McGrath urged Congress to limit its role to legislation and let the Department of Justice handle subversive inquiries. He spoke at a University of Maryland Law School dinner, warning Congress against taking over administrative duties and stressing vigilance against subversive elements. He noted DOJ successes and urged preserving the separation of powers.
Premier Sophocles Venizelos resigns amid U S criticism of his government which held 80 percent of Parliament. Retired Gen. Nicholas Plastiras seen forming a broader coalition at the king’s request. Meanwhile Makassar rebels surrender to Indonesia as Jakarta reports mobilized forces. US to send 15 million dollars in aid to Indochina. MacArthur adviser says US backs Asian independence in a Tokyo speech.
Pan American Day is proclaimed by Mayor Lawrence Lutkewitte with Pan American week observed across the western hemisphere. Mrs Helnhold Mueller of the American Legion Auxiliary notes the observance, following a luncheon held earlier in the week. Public observances trace back to 1890 and 1991 marks year since formal observances.
In Philadelphia the school board announced a six week after school charm program for teachers. Taught by teachers, it promises appearance tips voice training and personality development with special salary and promotion consideration for women. Men teachers were not invited.
Three truckers were fined by Magistrate Foster S Wheatly on state highway use violations. R L McDearmid paid $1 and costs for operating without a PSC order after arrest on Highway 54. Hollis Roberson, arrested on Highway 50, paid $10 plus costs. Zeina C G Barnhart pleaded guilty to overloading a truck exceeding 48 000 pounds on one axle, with a $25 fine and costs, after a prior Rolla fine for a similar offense.
The jury in Ray Armes case charged with assault with intent to kill was discharged after reporting a hopeless deadlock. The state will seek retrial in the late term. Armes, a 26 year old Herrin, Illinois man, allegedly wounded C. B. Hardin Jr., former Mayor of Stoutland, Missouri. The jury had begun deliberations yesterday and was ordered to resume this morning by Circuit Judge James B. Hawkins.
Atty General J E Taylor ruled that county courts in township counties lack power to close public roads for coal strip mining. Only special road district commissioners or township directors may authorize road closures in counties using township government. Also reports Miss Anna Mae Pershing, World War I commander, in critical condition after stroke, resting quietly at St Marys Hospital.
Princeton April 2 1942 AP Thomas Dewey argued the Republican record supports individual freedom while criticizing self interest behind free enterprise. He warned that some party members opposed labor rights and emphasized a GOP path of local rule and limited federal control. He defended unemployment insurance and other social programs but rejected universal health care and direct price controls.
Jack Kirkwood and Lilian Leigh of radio fame travel to Jefferson City to headline a benefit square dance at the Capitol. The event, sponsored by the county Cancer unit, kicks off at 8:30 p.m. with Governor Forrest Smith leading a grand promenade. The broadcast will air on KWOS and KWOS-FM and be carried by News-Tribune services to Rolla and Columbia.
Boonville dispatch reports Howard county census enumerators faced mixed cooperation. One dog ripped a census taker’s pants but caused no bite. another housewife initially refused admittance, claiming not to want anything, yet later cooperated and asked jokingly what comes next.
Arnold E. Bedsworth of Guthrie, 63, is listed in stable condition at St Marys hospital after a highway collision north of Jefferson City on Highway 54. He was in a southbound car that hit a truck driven by Raymond Forbis, 36, of West Bloomfield who reported he saw no one behind him and turned left after signaling. Forbis was uninjured. Bedsworth, 52, Mrs Agnes Lynes, 73, and Reed Trammel, 37, all sustained minor injuries. Lynes and Trammel are Guthrie residents.
Judge Andrew Schnatler sentenced two vagrants and a drunk to 90 days each, with orders to leave the city. William Starkey, Lee Starkey, and Walter Wittenberger claimed California origins en route to Chicago, all pleading guilty to vagrancy. Louis Seifried, listing Clinton as his address, pleaded guilty to intoxication.
