North Vietnamese assault repelled at Fire Base 6 again

North Vietnamese troops attacked Fire Base 6 in the central highlands for a fifth day but were repelled with heavy losses. South Vietnamese and U.S. sources reported 287 enemy killed, with government forces said to suffer no casualties. B52 strikes and artillery have pounded the area since fighting began.

State forester urges snow or rain in March and April

Assistant state forester Kevin Hafner described the past five weeks as the worst in years as snow blankets large timber areas from the Lake of the Ozarks southeastward. He cited 26 of 31 March fire days, potential losses up to 15000 acres, and noted budget strains for fire protection. He warned erosion and habitat loss from burnings and called for remaining manpower and funding to repair and document the damage.

Old Time Autos Display At Southwest Plaza Rally

About 20 vintage vehicles drew spectators at a Sunday rally near Southwest Plaza. No speed records were broken, but owners shared details of antique models such as a 1915 Model Ford, a 1933 Rolls Royce, a 1840 Packard, and a 1939 Cadillac. Talks hinted at forming a local old and classic car owners group.

Weekend Missouri traffic toll tops a dozen deaths

A string of weekend crashes across Missouri left twelve dead and multiple injured. In Columbia a four year old, Jeffrey Bassford, was struck by a car on I-70 inside the city limits. In Osage County Naomi Rector died in a two car crash on U.S. 50 near the junction with 63. The Rector vehicle hit a utility pole. several others were injured. A California teen, Cynthia Dempski, died when a pickup collided with a westbound train near Missouri 50. Another teen, Denise De Shong, perished in Independence when a wagon carrying youths overturned on U.S. 40. The weekend toll included numerous other injuries and arrests for traffic violations across Audrain, Jefferson, and surrounding counties.
