Rev J A Read preached his first sermon at the M E Church South on Sunday morning and afternoon at Lebanon. He disputed with Rev Chas Edwards, who was assigned to an Arkansas conference. Read, a young man, made an excellent impression and is expected to be well liked in Jasper.
The Alpha Club met Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Gus Campbell. The Bay View Reading course was taken up by the club and a discussion followed about future activities.
The Lewis Company plans an opera house season opener on the 24th with hopes of a big audience. A monthly trades day sale in Jasper begins the 26th, run by Rex, featuring livestock and farm items, with Prince Toto a premier bull among offerings. Also tonight at the opera house Hon O J Page and Hon L V Mutherson will speak on political issues from a Republican view. ladies are invited.
The issue teases content on page two with brief biographical sketches of public men and women of note and items on the Kitchen Cabinet and Poultry departments. Page three promises an interesting story of the Czar and Empress of Russia plus a Sunday school lesson and serial tale.
Justice of the Peace Chapman handled the case J. W. Coop versus F W Rumble last week. Coop sued for 219.50 in commissions from a real estate deal. Jury trial requested. jury awarded Coop 219.50. Rumble granted an appeal to the circuit court at Carthage.
The W C T U will meet with Miss Lissie Lawson Friday after noon at 2 o'clock. Others for the ensuing year will be elected at this meeting. All members are requested to be present.
The first instalment at a new verial titled The Carpet from Waedad is praised by readers for its engaging start. The tale hints at a continuing Far East setting with bold masterful themes carried from the earlier Carpet from Bagdad and promises further intrigue.
A large party of friends and neighbors were entertained at the home of Deora Patterson and wife last week. The guest list includes Mary Tapley, Lena Matterson, Agnes Chow, Floyd McClemock, Orville Winder, Levi Wilder, Basil McIntock, Wilfred Patterson, Clara Hubbard Laryson Waits, Agnes Lewis, Carts Winans, Zale Wright, Clarley McClintock, Nita Patterson, Civneva McClintock, Irene Winans, Geneva Hubbard and others. The news was received late for last week’s publication.
D H Wampler advertises cider apples for sale four miles south of Jasper.
Hon BW Bates, Democratic candidate for prosecuting attorney, will speak at the opera house next Tuesday evening. Friends and ladies are especially invited to hear the candidate outline his platform.
One of the region’s largest purebred Hereford sales will unfold at the Carthage fair grounds on Monday October 28. Southwest Missouri breeders own Gulick herd stock and breeders from Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma will attend, making it a major cattle event in the area.
The Carthage Do.. enters new meet in Jasper with a well attended gathering. Superintendent W. Jee, Rev. H. Y. A. and Dr. Bhar spoke on church work, while speakers from Joplin and Sedalia joined. The conference concluded with thanks to hosts in Jasper and expressions of hospitality. Readers are urged to note the lively discussions and the broad scope of the event.
Sunday October 6 outdoor dinner hosted by Win Cave miles west of Jasper gathered about 25 neighbors and friends. Mr Cave provided a phonograph while Mr Kirby showed a picture machine. Attendees included G F Brown George Waits C B Johnston Wim Mevins W Kellew and others from Duvall Purcell and surrounding areas. CORRESPONDENT.
