Leslie Lawless Injured After Fall in 20-foot Well

Leslie Lawless of Jasper area fell to the bottom of a 20-foot well last week, suffering a scalp wound needing four stitches and loss of consciousness. Found unconscious by his wife, he was brought to town for treatment and is now recovering. Dr Herman La Force and family of Oklahoma visit Jasper. La Force has a new commission as first lieutenant and awaits orders.

Rabies Treatment Given to Jasper Area Child

Dr Knott administers Pasteur treatment to Chester Selsor four year old son of Gerald Selsor and wife near Jasper after a dog on the farm tested positive for rabies. The dog’s head was sent to the state health department for examination and the child is receiving preventative treatment as a safety measure.

Births Reported This Week Near Jasper and South Jasper

Births reported to the News this week include a girl born Monday November 6 to J H Evans and wife one mile north of Jasper and a girl born Tuesday November 6 to George Sweezy and wife at a location 244 miles south of Jasper.

War Work Talk Draws Local Audience at YMCA Event

A large crowd is expected for a free admission talk by H J Decker on the YMCA war effort. Dr Curtis Jenkins, fresh from Europe, urged support for an $85,000,000 YMCA campaign behind the battle lines, with 47 church groups backing the cause. Jasper men form a committee to organize local participation under county leadership.

New War Stamp Tax on Parcel Post Effective 1917

War tax applies to parcel post shipments of 25 cents or more. Consignors pay 1 cent per 25 cent increments or fraction thereof, via special war revenue stamps. Packages unpaid will not be forwarded. ordinary stamps not accepted. Coal scarcity in Jasper eases as weather stays mild for The News and others.
