Dad warns of looming bills at month end from credit purchases. He recalls buying on charge and now finds income gone with little to show. The message advocates paying cash, buying at a Real Cash Store, and opening a savings account to let money grow.
On Sunday May 23 the Christian Church will hold a brief Mother's Day program during the Sunday School hour followed by preaching services. Preaching continues at 8 o'clock Sunday evening. You are invited.
The road district election Tuesday drew 188 votes with 104 for and 34 against. Rumor claimed higher taxes up to 1.00 per acre, but the country vote favored the proposition, despite prejudice from the rumor.
Dr. Lucas, army medical officer, and Mr. Bass of the United States Health Department visited Monday then moved on to Sarcoxie to install sanitary closets in towns as urged by state health laws. About 30 closets already installed here, with local ordinance and state law now in effect. They plan to return to Jasper to finish the work. Officials say the measure fights typhoid and fevers, reduces fly nuisance, and improves cleanliness inside and out.
Mrs. Jay Good remains near death after a two week illness. She shows little improvement, with strength slowly failing and no clear change in her condition over recent days.
The Chit paper announces the marriage of Frank M. Houck and Miss Helen Halsey in Independence Kansas on Thursday May 20. Houck is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Houck long known in the area. Halsey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Halsey of Independence. The editors are old friends and schoolmates.
In eighth grade Bernard McCune led with a 92 percent average, followed by Lucille Dunning at 91 and Eunice Hayzleit at 89. In seventh grade Marguerite Teeter topped with 92, Vincent Johnson 91, and Dorothea Rex 87. Several students promoted to high school include Siegel Beck Elmo Maize Cecil Hastings Bernard McCon Vernon Wolfe Bertie Awick Eugene Senaor Pearl Lilly Elsie Rand Ruth Turner Yulah Swank Pansy Bolen Lucille Dunning Eunice Hayzlett Eunice Hayzlet and Yulah Swank were neither absent nor tardy for the term.
Roy Webb, newly employed with Swift and Company packers in St. Louis, is appointed head of the St. Louis advertising department. He notes many Missouri University men in the city and a strong demand for university and college graduates in St. Louis and beyond. Miss Melva Quillin graduates from Phoenix High School May 27 1920. the Quillin family once lived in Bethel. An auction of five Scotch collie pups drew a crowd but sold for 5.75 to five buyers including Robert Gresham and Tom Wardlow.
McCune and Tallman unloaded five Wallis Tractors described as the ultimate tractor. The units, built for nine years, are capable of pulling three 14 inch plows or a 9 foot tandem disc harrow. Several tractors will be delivered immediately.
