A Jasper Missouri advertisement extols local merchants for valuing country trade over city trade. It urges farmers to barter butter and produce at Webb Brothers Mercantile Company and similar stores, listing goods from medicines to implements and wagons. The appeal stresses appreciation, quality, and ready credit for farm produce and seeds.
G A Cassil of Carthage donated a building lot valued at 810,000 to the Y M C A for a site for a new building. The Y M C A will raise funds for a handsome facility. The first 1907 Jasper County baseball game saw Central High School defeat Franklin School 13 to 5 at Carthage. Mrs Elizabeth Sbaoke died at her daughter’s home north of Avilla. she was 87 and had lived in Jasper County fifty years. Fred Fits, a 22 year old miner of Carterville, was fatally shot by his companion Susie Lowry near the Memphis depot. James Kelly, Webb City jeweler, placed a bid for the eternal gratitude and perhaps the hand of a Briar Isle soubrette. a Carnegia bravery medal was awarded on Sunday afternoon. Isle of Spice chorus girls’ drive caused a runaway horse at the Newssod hotel. Kelly dashed to stop it and was dragged but later recovered. Webb City and others expect an interesting outcome.
Carthage police raided a Sunday craps game where a party of around forty to fifty players took part. One person was singled out as a victim during the bust, while local papers described the event as a routine enforcement action.
A mail order representative told Iowa newspaper men that advertising sustains mail order houses. He urged local merchants to advertise freely and clearly describe items with prices to counter mail order competition. He warned that when towns lack up to date advertising, mail order firms flood the area with literature and win sales.
Jas Thompson of Webb Bros Mercantile Co has sold his stake to Dr Geo Andrewa who already holds stock. Thompson will leave Jasper for uncertain plans, possibly Colorado. Local regret at his departure and best wishes for prosperity in future endeavors.
Jasper carpenters are busy with about six new residences under construction in various parts of town. In the north end A C Swanson Jobo Hall and Jobo Rathbuo are erecting homes within a block of each other while Jobo Ward in the south end is building a two story house on Lexington street. The rapid building boom suggests population growth matching rising property values as homes are scarce for rent on short notice.
The W C T U met with Mrs Nettie Harbor on a Tuesday in March with low attendance and some interest. A reception for district president Mrs Newton of Carthage was planned. The next meeting with Mrs N A Mackey is set for March 19 at three o'clock with program including roll call quotations from Prohibition Leaders papers on Neale Dow and Frances Willard life and a discussion on the Anti Saloon League. Everyone invited to participate in WCTU work.
David Pugh, longtime Jasper county farmer and non native of Tennessee who moved from Texas to Missouri, died Friday afternoon at his son’s home three and a half miles west of the city. He was 64. Funeral services by D. W. Teeter of Jasper at Oakton church followed by burial in Oakton cemetery on Sunday. He is survived by seven children. his wife died about a year ago.
Resolutions from Peerless Chapter No 75 in Jasper Missouri honor J B La Force who died February 26 1997. The document notes sorrow at the loss of a valued member and extends sympathy to the bereaved family. It calls for the charter to be draped in mourning and for copies of the resolutions to be placed in minutes and sent to the family. A quoted line from a poem serves as a closing sentiment.
Joyes the clothier has received an F. P. gag lighting plant for immediate operation. Mr Joyce claims the F. P. provides the best lights among gas lighting devices and expects to have the best lighted store in town within a few days.
