Road overseers in Joplin press the poll tax for the year with delinquent names to be turned over to a justice of the peace by July 1. A small penalty will be added. The piece notes stubborn resistance and constitutional objections from a few residents. Contributed articles and ads must reach the office by Tuesday.
The Jasper Carthage motor bus line, in operation recently, was discontinued last week after failing to meet expectations. Officials attribute light travel to the poor weather and lower ridership impacting the service.
A notice says a book exchange will be held next Saturday in the High School Library from 2310 to 1a0 under the regular rule. Students may obtain books through William K. Chatten.
Reports from Jasper County farmers indicate a good yield probable for wheat and corn after recent cold spells. Interviews suggest yields may be slightly below last year’s record but still strong, with more moisture and improving conditions boosting optimism. Some fields show issues from Hessian fly and poor fertilization, but such cases are few.
Webb City Auto Transportation Company suspended service between Carthage and Jasper last week provoking resentment from locals who say the new competitor provided transport where none existed. The company, tied to a large streetcar operator, claims customers shifted to the rival after the newcomer funded a second hand Ford to serve the route, challenging existing firms and spotlighting exclusive access to the market.

Tom Hardaway Dick Deardort Ernest Crawford Clyde Rains Claude Royer and George Osgoudles left yesterday morning for Galena. They will rent boats and begin a week long trip down Spring River. The journey covers many miles over a winding stream with estimated distances noted.
On Friday May 25 members of the M. E. Church South and neighbors gathered at the country home of Mr and Mrs I D Tiler to celebrate his seventy fifth birthday. The visitors brought a basket dinner and the day was enjoyed by all present. A Friend.
The Joplin district mines raised wages this week due to high ore prices. All underground workers under wage pay, except contract workers, saw increase. This is the second raise this year totaling about forty percent since January. Over 8,000 miners benefited since Friday morning.
James J. Johnston, longtime Jasper resident, died at his home on Thursday night May 27 from heart failure. The funeral was held Saturday at 1 PM with interment in Brethren Church Cemetery. Survived by wife and one son C. W. Johnston of Lawrence Kansas, who plans to move to Jasper. Mrs Johnston and others express gratitude for condolences and offerings.
