A playful baseball themed ad urges timely farming, urging use of specific plows discs harrows and fertilizers. It promotes Best-Ever Emerson Gang gear plus Star Thoroughbred hats and Ox Grain Grower with 4 percent potash for $24.50 cash, promising better soil and higher yields as the umpire calls safe at home.
The Jasper school board burned bonds Nos 23 24 and 25 each with face value 200 and 5 percent interest from issue date after they were paid off in order. The district issued six bonds in 1909 totaling 9000 used to build the school. Twenty bonds representing 4000 remain to be paid.
The Purcell druggist H. H. Fox was found guilty of violating the local option law and sentenced to six months in jail along with a $300 fine. Prosecutor Coon had five state witnesses fined $5 each after they hid from the courtroom before their testimony.
Two hundred fifty miners at the American-Davey mine in Prosperity walked out last Saturday after owners announced a 25 percent wage cut. Rumors of replacing workers with foreign laborers circulate, which the company denies. Foreigner workers at another Prosperity mine reportedly left the state under striker orders to avoid owner reaction.
Hendricks installs a cement walk in front of his residence on Grand Avenue. When the city adds the crossing east of his property, Grand Avenue will be lined with cement on both sides nearly to the city limits.
The Wells couple welcomed a daughter weighing nine pounds last Sunday. Dr. King noted the healthy birth and reported the new arrival adds joy to the family.
The News piano contest nears the end of the third prize period with a tight race. Zelda Covert leads by a small margin, followed by Jeasie Johnston Burkie Thomson Nora Fox Vandh Simmons Zella Wright Mamie Corder Eva Selser and others. No new contestants are added and standings may shift before next week.
Mr and Mrs J W Maddox living south of Jasper enjoyed a surprise reunion for son Ernest last Sunday. Guests included Joather Maddox and family Freida John C Wilson and family Earl Maddox and Mrs C Magoffin and children. Ernest recently secured a fine position at the Webb City Carterville foundry in Webb City starting last Monday.
Readers are told Jasper merchants partner with The News in a piano contest. Shoppers receive 20 vote coupons per dollar spent, usable to vote for young contestants for a $400 piano. Submit coupons at the News office or have merchants handle them, and urge others to trade in Jasper.
Sarcoxie has had two county offices in twenty years and deserves fair locality in the county ticket. I. E. Morris, Republican candidate for county collector, is the only candidate east of Carthage for a county office.
Mrs. Geo Berry and her two young daughters Velny and Vera along with sister Miss Emma Cline escaped serious harm after a runaway horse bolted from Bethel church. The collision with a tree half a mile from the church threw all four from the rig. the ladies sustained bruises while protecting the children, the rig suffered damage, and the horse was injured. Miss Cline left for Eldorado Tuesday for a week at the springs. A. W. Teeter gave a basket of notably large golden plums to the writer noted as the largest seen.
