A Jasper and Barton Counties notice condemns printers who keep subscription and job-work prices steady while paper and stock costs soar. It likens this to a sinner stubborn about the hereafter and warns of an abyss for printers during war times. The News pitches itself as the leading advertising medium for stock breeders, reaching more farm homes than any other local paper.
Last Friday the Lamar ladies presented a silk American flag to Company C of the Second Missouri National Guard in Nevada. Dr J J Martin gave the presentation speech. Miss Brides and Miss Harkless sang The Star Spangled Banner. Captain Hal accepted the flag and pledged it would remain unsoiled by treason or cowardice. An informal reception followed.
The A H T A of the Diamond area pursued a chicken thief last week, clarifying it was not a visiting Alba resident as some claimed. The Antis warn marauders will face consequences if caught in the territory.

Epworth League at 7 p.m. Mendel Drake presides. 8 p.m. Song Service and sermon on The Value of Christian Experience. Midweek prayer Thursday. Also notes Jasper Salem Bos ton schedules, Baptist preacher Edwin Rogers visiting July 5. Christian and Brethren churches list Bible School, prayer meetings, and worship times.
Five year old Chane Kunkler son of L Kunkler and wife fell beneath a gravel wagon and both heels were crushed. The accident occurred yesterday and the injuries were described as painful but not life threatening.
Frank Gulick, well known Hereford breeder, sold his entire herd this week. Cox of Arkansas and Monett bought ten young cows and calves, ten 2-year-old heifers, and one 2-year-old male for 75,000. W T McCray of Kentland Indiana purchased 61 cows 12 bulls and 35 calves for 225,000. The herd included Corrector Fairfax, a bull bought three years ago for 3,750. Gulick’s 1200 acre Jasper area farm may shift focus, with jackrabbit chasing as a possible pastime.
Two men died during a July swim lesson in Newton County. Fred Hedge, 12, drowned in Spring Silver near Carthage after 119 hours in water. Newton Covert, 30, nephew of C A Covert, drowned in Center Creek at Greenwood Park while teaching his wife to swim. she was rescued but he could not be revived. Both were not expert swimmers and likely suffered cramps.
Mrs. Frank Hardenbrook received a telegram Wednesday morning announcing the serious illness of her brother Lon Howard at his home in Wichita Kansas. Mrs. Hardenbrook left for Wichita Wednesday.
Mr Jake Bleff of Town and Miss Lot Patterson of Lymer celebrated Independence Day by marrying. The ceremony was performed by K J J Martin at the M E parsonage in Jasper.
