General principles favor shallow cultivation on average uplands, especially late in the season, with deeper passes only where soils are wet, foul, compact, or prone to running together. A sequence of one to two roughings followed by a three or more narrow shovel cultivator to progressively shallower passes yields best returns, barring wet weather.
