A severe cold snap and heavy plains snow blanket the region. Thermometers in southwest Missouri hit 14 below Tuesday morning, matching the coldest on record. Winds kept people indoors as gas supplies teetered in Carthage and snowy drifts reached near three feet in places.
Former Prosecuting Attorney McGilvray announces retirement and partners with W A Evans to form Evans and McGilvray, an abstracting and title business in Barton County. Evans, a Lamar resident from Princeville Illinois, brings legal experience and clerical skill to the firm. The Lamar Democrat notes continued title work and possible future office relocation to a dedicated abstracts office.

Oliver Billings, a ten year old, was arrested at Joplin Sunday for the Noel Missouri bank robbery in McDonald county. He confessed within a half hour, claiming only 2 dollars were in the drawer and that most funds were used to settle debts and hire a horse. A companion allegedly hired him for the crime, and the money was recovered under wagon scales.
In Jasper the mood was self congratulatory as support for natural gas failed to bring light from Kuosan and Oklahoma fields. Carthage froze under low pressure while Kansas City lacked heat, leading to deaths. In big towns, business thrived last week despite the cold, while coal pressure remained steady.
Dr J F Shepherd pastor of First Presbyterian Webb City faced a peace disturbance charge in city court after an allegation from a woman who later recanted. At a congregational meeting, members adopted resolutions of esteem and confidence, praising the pastor and condemning city officials and press coverage. The trial ended with his acquittal.
Mrs. D K Buscryge died last Friday at the Nevada insane asylum after ten years there, from paralytic stroke the second of its kind within a year. The burial took place at West Cemetery in Carthage after services at Christine church. Her husband DU K Buerge learned of her passing too late to see her alive and accompanied the remains to Carthage. Surviving are husband, son Clyde 16, three brothers Richard Moore Thomas Ruth, and three sisters Emily Lydia Howey and Walker of Kansas Colorado and Jasper county Mo respectively.
A Presbyterian church invites all to attend Sabbath services at the usual hours. The schedule includes services Monday Tuesday and Wednesday along with prayers and perhaps a logger. All are cordially invited to attend.
In Carthage last night Jasper beat Carthage on the floor, but the home scorekeeper credited Crain of Carthage with a basket he did not make. The 18 to 17 Carthage victory is alleged to be tainted by the official scorekeeper’s error, prompting protest. Spectators recall Crain–Strecker as the focal matchup, with Jasper contesting the result amid crowd skepticism and claims of betting on the game.
Jasper led 19 to 6 at halftime but Joplin rallied in the second half. Hatfield and Tabler scored in quick succession to seal a 24 to 24 tie before the Jasper victory was saved by late baskets. Tabler totaled six baskets, Crawford had three in the first half, and Thomas and Stricker impressed at guard.
Charley Ketterman spent Tuesday morning sweeping sidewalks on east Grand avenue. He cleared the path from his home toward town, leaving only a few short stretches already cleaned, completing the job in two and a half hours.
