In January 1909 the boss left for California for 30 days and during his absence a 30 day clearance sale operated with Bert Webb at the bar. The note records a shift to a 15 day sale managed by the writer, listing prices for items such as Wrap Pad, Pingree Shoes, Sweaters and Underwear, with sale running from January 6 to January 22.
Announced at Port Scott Kansas the marriage of Lyle Kirby to C E Vantrees of Jasper. The couple will spend this week in Fort Scott and Butler before returning to Jasper. Vantrees has worked in Phi city overseeing Hiram Nichola Shop, with many friends here. The bride is from a farming family recently moved from Greenfield to Fort Scott.
In Jasper county, John Ward bought two hogs from L H Mills on the old Wuizzerd farm four miles east of town. The pair weighed 1220 pounds with one hog at 680 pounds and the other 540 pounds, selling for 8485 at market. Ownership now shifts and the Greenfield farmer may soon reply.
Jasper fans expect a top Borg basketball clash as the Kansas City Schmelzers visit the local court on Tuesday January 15 to meet Jasper. The visiting squad boasts road tested players Bidwell and Torre and seeks to extend a long home losing streak for Jasper.
Old timer Woodring returns to Jasper, recalling life on the Wm Lewis farm and early frontier days. He left in 1875 for Colorado, settled near Hotchkiss on an Ute reservation claim, prospered as irrigation and fruit culture flourished, aided by the Gunnison tunnel and railroad expansion. A buggy overturned after a sleighing mishap near the F. A. Miller farm as Dr Knott and Hugh Morton, returning from Esrom, escaped serious injury when the horses bolted on an icy road. The double tree snapped, the buggy wrecked, and both occupants were trapped briefly but unharmed beyond bruises.
The town settles after holiday visitors leave, restoring a quiet Christmas atmosphere. Residents reflect on losses and the slow recovery of the pocketbook, while children adjust to the postholiday lull. The festive mood fades as the season ends.
