About 20 neighbors gathered at Mrs Elmer Pugh’s home last Wednesday to sew carpet rags. They produced nearly 22 pounds of rags. A splendid dinner followed the work with attendees including J W Ferguson W M Deardorff Campbell Pace Clint Simpson Wm McCime Bray Louis Boyer Will Wood Charley Farris Freda and sons Henry Pugh Wm Budd Miss Troia Wood Grace Gulick Ruth Blanche Pugh Violet Budd.
George C Glen plans a two day sale near Rex on February 26 27 selling horses cattle hogs chickens harness farm tools and household goods from his farm home two miles west one mile north Rex. Wm Ward and others hold a sale at the Ward farm near Jasper featuring two spans of mules cattle feed implements and more with Rex and Boland acting as auctioneers.
Ned Woodman, noted cartoonist and humorist, will appear at the M E Church Wednesday March 4 under the Jasper lyceum committee. Tickets four for $1.00 or 15 cents for adults at the door. pupils under 12 pay 25 cents. He gained fame via Chicago Inter Ocean Life Judge and other publications. His program blends humor, storytelling, dialect reading and verses, entertaining all to varying degrees.
The program on Friday night February 26 at the opera house, under the M. E. Church Trial Society, features a mixed quartet performance of We’ll Have to Mortgage the Farm, a violin solo by Miss Beulah Patterson Meritation with Two Little Rogues, and a comic O P R A scene A Modern Sewing Society. Cast includes Mrs. President, Mrs. Hardaway, Mrs. Knowall, Mrs. Wise, Mrs. Short, Mrs. Cheen, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Horton, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Gossip, Mrs. Truthful, Miss Flutter, Miss Simple, Miss Pert, Miss Small, and others. Admission 15 cents.
The Joplin Globe reports The Auto Transportation Company in Joplin has authorized capital of 30000 with 15000 paid in. Four buses, each seating 20, are purchased by Indiana Truck Company Marion and Packard Detroit and will serve between Carthage and Jasper, Joplin and Neosho, Galena and Baxter Springs.
A Lamar Democrat excerpt from an Arkansas paper reprints a missing horse advertisement describing a sorrel horse with a white nose and about 700 pounds. It recalls Levi Miller's cow notice when he moved to Arkansas last year, noting a young Jersey cow that was milking and bred.
Lon J. Box formerly of Jasper, son of L. L. Fox, has bought a controlling stake in Wenandly Livery Company of Bend Oregon, now owning about 50 percent of stock. The firm handles stage and hack services to nearby towns. Dr Kinett reports several patients improving while others are seriously ill from various ailments. A rheumatic and valvular heart issue affects six year old Charley Dickerson, who lives with grandparents A. T. Dean and wife in Zion neighborhood. Mr Leighty of Canada, visiting his parents near Jasper, is seriously ill with symptoms like liver abscess or appendicitis but showing some improvement. Dan Minor and wife, staying with Mrs Minor’s father J. A. Cloud, welcome a baby girl born Saturday February 1. Mrs Minor also has pneumonia, as does her year-old brother Jimmie. The 16-year-old son of D. J. Smith near the Earl farm southeast of Jasper has pneumonia. A girl baby of W. L. Tabler and wife has pneumonia.
The Lebanon youth group presents A Prairie Rose, a four act ranch life play set in the Kansas prairies of the late sixties and early seventies. It will be at the opera house next Saturday night February 20 with a night crowd in Boston and a good turnout in Lebanon. A mid show attraction features the Fiddling Tornado from Coon Creek.
A committee led by Wm S. Winans and Wm Patterson circulated posters in King school district calling farmers in northern Jasper and southern Barton counties to form a Farmers Elevator company in Jasper Mo. The plan aims to build an elevator owned by farmers to market grain and save on margins, with a meeting set for January 20 at 7 40 pm to select a three person committee to attend a Jasper convention and push the project.
The embroidery club gathered last Wednesday at Mrs John Marsh residence with Mesdames Spaid Nice and Woods assisting. An afternoon of Progressive Hearts ended with a two course luncheon and each guest receiving an aluminum thimble and a verse noting the hostesses’ names. Members present included Mesdames W T H Knott J T Sharp H J Deardorff Eli Scott Chas Ward Tom Hardaway Clint Teeter Charles Teeter Ernest Crawford and Charles Hayzlete. Invited guests were Merchants A Drake L Nunnery Chill Will Ro Griffith and V J Mendricks.
