Attempted suicide by rifle shocks local community
Mrs Emma Lucas known as Miss Emma Lester attempted death by own action last Thursday, firing a comfort target rifle in the northwest farm home five miles from town. The flesh wound was deemed non dangerous by Dr Knott though blood poisoning was possible. The Lucas family had just returned from overnight away. An unrelated elderly visitor, E H Bolles, a former newspaper writer, arrived in town to seek aid and later wrote for the paper. He claimed prior hospitalization costs totaling 2900.09 and planned to go to Nev ada and the Weltmer institute.

E Keeling a famed photographer from Nevada arrives in Jasper to set up a studio. He has eleven state medals and serves as secretary of the Missouri Photographers Association. The studio will operate Thursdays 9 am to 5 pm with top supplies. Miss Leona Boots joins Harbut's store as clerk, replacing Miss Louie Hughes at the News. Jasper Farmer Narrowly Escapes Freight Train Crash
H T Grider of Jasper was thrown forty feet as Frisco freight struck his wagon at the Knell fair grounds crossing Sunday morning. The wagon was wrecked, but Grider and his team escaped with minor injuries. The train crew halted and Harry H Westbay settled damages with Grider, road denying liability. Also notes a new jack replacing Swego, and local updates on Wm Dugan and Joplin trip.
