After a long session at the Grand Pacific Hotel, packers and teamsters reached a settlement on wages for cart drivers and wagon horses, with strikers reinstated and no work on Labor Day. Rioting occurred yesterday with arrests, injuries, and one fatality likely avoided. officials and packing firms participated in the resolution.
A young man named Case from Chicago was found dazed on North Franklin street near the viaduct and taken to Dr. Cunningham. An epileptic fit caused scratches on his face, no bones were broken, and he planned to return to Beloit on the noon train. He had been accused of breaking fifteen beer kegs and faced a $5,000 damages suit by a Milwaukee bar.
The British appoint Hon. Michael Henry Herbert as ambassador to the United States, with his wife an American, enhancing ties with Roosevelt. Spain designates Senor de Ojeda, formerly secretary of the Paris peace commission and now minister to Tangier, to succeed the Duke of Arcoss as minister to Washington.
In London the House of Commons clashed during a debate on a fifty thousand pound grant to Lord Kitchener. Mr Redmond, Irish Nationalist, charged Kitchener with war on women and children and claimed he was responsible for the deaths of ten thousand children before order was restored and a closure motion carried.
J Pierpont Morgan buys Gutman collection while Chicago university adds a Japanese course. Riots injure sixty four and arrest sixty seven in Chicago. a park car incident, a kidnapping claim, poison attempts, and various local scuffles color a broad day of events. Prominent figures including Captain Hobson and John Alexander Dowle feature in political and religious notes across several cities.
A Baraboo lawyer drew up charges against Warden McClaughry of Waupun prison. Governor La Follette and four state board members released a statement defending the board’s actions and stating they had considered reappointing McClaughry before charges were filed. The board asserts the governor’s accusations cover cruel and inhuman treatment, severe punishment for trivial matters, profane language, and temper, while noting McClaughry resigned after refusing an investigation.
In Rome on June 6 the Taft commission was received by Pope Leo XIII in a cordial audience. Gov. Taft delivered Roosevelt's letter and congratulated the pontiff on his jubilee, hoping his Rome visit aids both the church and the Philippines, then presented a case of books from President Roosevelt. The Pope expressed pleasure and thanked them as the audience turned to friendly conversation.
George S Parker receives a double string of small antique beads from Egypt, a relic of Thebes at least two thousand years old. Each bead is hand made and unique. A tiny mummy image from the same era accompanies the beads, marking another curiosity for his collection.
Washington reports Senator Hannantadas presented two large maps in the Senate showing thirty nine active volcanoes within one hundred miles of the Nicaraguan route, challenging Sen Morgan's claim of no danger. He notes Panama route has no active or extinct volcanoes, supporting the latter option.
Amsterdam June report states former President Kroger is dying of a broken heart. The brief note cites worsening condition and widespread concern over his health.
Pretoria dispatches report that the Doers are surrendering in large numbers as peace agreements take effect. J. H. Flaherty, former deputy warden of Waupun prison, will answer charges before the board of control. An illustrated prison life lecture is planned in Oshkosh tonight. In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania more firemen enginemen and pumpmen joined the strike as leaders claim victory over operators. Operators continue to import nonunion workers while some strikers persuade others to return home amid isolated attacks on nonunion men near Lykens miners halted workers and authorities kept order.
Oscar Webb, unable to pay five dollars arrears for board, shot and killed his wife, her mother, and Julia Waller in Philadelphia, then killed himself. All victims and the assailant were African American.
London reports the English cabinet met to consider the war settlement details this morning. Paris notes M Brisson refused the task of forming a new cabinet, declining the assignment.
Washington June 5 The President opened the eleventh annual session of the Association of Military Surgeons at the National Theater. He praised the doctors for facing similar responsibilities as fellow soldiers and urged a close study of the scientific side of their work. Secretaries of Navy War and Treasury attended, along with Surgeon General Sternberg. Elsewhere: a man in Appollonia, George Link, 49, killed by lightning. volcanic eruption near La Paz Bolivia kills many. baby found dead in Milwaukee river. Beloit athlete Ed Merrill may head Appleton program. North Dakota auto plans in Oshkosh. Bishop-elect Mesmer of Green Bay to be ordained in Manila. Local notes include Kenosha playground, trolley ordinance, Platteville mining death, electric-car injury, and labor unrest cases.
In this June 6, 1902 letter from Jamesville Wis Whitehead reports the Governor La Follette seeks sweeping reform of the Tax Commission. He argues the commission should report to him, limit expenditures, and transfer statistical work to the Bureau of Statistics to cut costs and sharpen law enforcement. He warns the commission could be overpowered if not recast and urges constitutional constraint and faster, accurate work through centralized control. Continued on Page 6.
