True Business Conditions surveys farmers and merchants asking why 2 pounds of pork cost 35 to 40 cents while hogs cost far less. Oklahoma hides, Georgia cotton, and Maryland apples are cited. Government study finds retail price components high, driven by store rent, ice, labor, packaging, and delivery costs, not solely retailer profit.
