Experiments With Heliographs Planned For National Forests
The War Department will test heliographs in the Kaniksu Idaho and Stanislaus California forests this summer to gauge fire reporting and rapid communication in remote areas. Differences in climate, latitude, and tree species will determine suitability for local use across the 148 National Forests in 19 states and Alaska. In 1908 the government spent 2,526,098.02 dollars on administration and protection, including 3,400 miles of trails and 3,200 miles of telephone lines.
