General H. C. Clark accompanied the officers during a inspection tour observed by unit members.
Captain McClintock of the 13th Cavalry U S A inspected Company F 6th Regiment Infantry National Guards of Missouri at Armory Hall. General H C Clark accompanied him as Missouri troops commander. The unit praised as among the best in state service, members present, inspection praised, and a hearty lunch followed the proceedings.
New enterprise opens a stave and heading factory in Cape County, employing about 20 men. The plant will saw timber into bolts for staves and heading from logs, turning raw material into finished products. The barrel machine, once thought to threaten labor, proves beneficial by increasing output without adding labor.
Robert Morton shows slow improvement while in town Saturday. Glover Harris and N. M. Davis recover slowly. crops expected late due to heavy rain. Pleasant Hill basket dinner ends late. Linnie Sides visits Fruitland from Neelys Landing. Davis Bros buy W. E. Colyers restaurant and will keep the stand. Wim. Wessell travels to St. Louis to stock the new Fruitland store.
The water works were tested last Monday with several leaks discovered. A pipe near the courthouse broke due to excessive pressure. Hiram Philips, head civil engineer, is here to adjust matters while contractors work to ready the plant for turnover to the city.
The Cape Girardeau County Farmers and Stock Breeders Association with County Court will award prizes for the best corn in the coming year. Multiple classes, scholarships for youth, and all-expense paid trips to Columbia are planned. Register by sending name to L Johnson in Cape Girardeau. Shares at 50 cents sold to support improved grain and stock exhibits. Money to B F Sides in Pocahontas or left with John Putz in Jackson, Missouri.
The High School will host a concert at Turner Hall Monday night for the track team fundraiser. Pupils debated school colors and voted to switch from yellow and white to royal purple and white. The track squad works on Gladish field, seniors finish Cicero and read Archias Citizenship, with a preliminary contest at J M A recital hall Friday at 2 30. Rehearsals are ongoing. admission to the concert is 25 cents.
On Monday evening April 27 Jackson ladies with military boys and city children present a program at J M A Recital Hall. The paper will publish next week the full program of two dramas special music and features. Admission 25 and 10 cents with free for under six. proceeds for local W C T U work directed by Mrs Maggie B Hays. Refreshments to follow. generous patronage hoped from Jackson public.
H 8 McFerron reports two of his dogs went mad and were killed last week after a dog madly crossed the country around January 18. One dog snapped at his sister in law but did not bite. He says hogs tied to the dogs were also exposed, and he consulted the state veterinarian to assess risk to other hogs and animals.
A Jackson committee of John G. Putz Rev C P Browning and J L Jenkins plans an August home coming exhibit of historic articles. Items may include coins Indian relics firearms swords hooks china pottery instruments tools and heirlooms borrowed for safekeeping. Owners may loan items by contacting the committee.
A local high school will present a concert at Turner Hall next Monday night. Students will perform selections from classical and school repertoire in a community event.
