Stewart Hindman and Maney’s brigades resist the assault as Gen Johnson boosts troop morale. Eighth Texas Cavalry captures Wisconsin brigade commander O H LaGrange and 84 men.

Shooting Affair Near Belmont
A shooting two miles east of Belmont on September 16 left Mrs. Morris and Miss Evans struck by shotgun shot at about seventy yards. The assailant, a boy named Smith, fled by train from Paden. a warrant charges him with attempt to kill and murder. The motive given is the women had allegedly lied about him. Deputy Sheriff Woodley provided details. In other news, a church baptism service near Jacinto Road saw four people baptized by Rev WL Norman. Uncle Til Herridge died September 18 at 89, burial in Oak Grove. Also, Success Magazine seeks renewals and new subscriptions through Room 108 in New York.

Sudden death of Chas Castleberry in Mississippi
The death of Chas Castleberry at New Albany Miss occurred Sept 16. He was born 1840 1841 on the Castleberry place between Iuka and Eastport. He served in Reddy s cavalry and rose to first sergeant. After the war he ran a mill and served as sheriff two terms 1874 to 1878. His wife died in 1877 and they had two children a son who died young and a daughter Henrietta who survived and attended the funeral. The service was held at home by Rev OL Savage and a war comrade spoke at the grave. He lived a life described as checkered with faults and virtues. A local farm for sale near Iuka is advertised with terms.
