Coyote Proof Fence in Oregon Shows Mixed Results
A woven wire and barbed top fence in Walowa National Forest, Oregon, keeps out small predators but fails against grizzlies. About 2,200 sheep have grazed without herding since June 20, with six large grizzlies killed nearby by a forest service hunter. Private landowners like J. W. Emmons replicate the fence with 670 ewes and report good gains, while records compare weights of lambs inside versus outside the fence.
